  • He covers for her so no one knows what she was up to.
  • She goes to see the school guidance counselor, whom she's been meeting with since the death of her sister. The counselor doesn't know about Violet's suicide attempt.
  • Later that day, in U.S. Geography, Violet and Finch team up for a project. They'll be visiting various tourist attractions across the state of Indiana.
  • Violet's being pursued by Ryan Cross, whom she dated before her sister's death. She goes out with him a few times, but she's just not feeling it.
  • Meanwhile, she feels major sparks with Finch. She tries to ignore it until she can't anymore. After that, she and Finch are officially an item.
  • Being with Finch helps Violet make progress in her personal life. She's riding in cars again and even working on a new web magazine.
  • After she loses her virginity to Finch, Violet accidentally falls asleep. The next morning, she realizes she's been out all night. Her parents are so furious that they forbid her from seeing Finch.
  • When Finch is expelled from school, Violet is forced to start sneaking around behind her parents' backs. She sees Finch in secret, but it's not all that often.
  • Violet's friend Amanda tells her about seeing Finch at a suicide support group. Violet confronts him about it, and Finch runs away from home.
  • She only hears from Finch occasionally, and his texts are super-mysterious. After more than a month, Violet receives a goodbye email. She checks around and finds out that everyone else Finch knows has received one, too.
  • Violet figures out that Finch has drowned himself at the Blue Hole. She goes there and her worst fear is confirmed.
  • After Finch's death, Violet graduates high school and continues to work on her web magazine. She's sad, but she's still living her life.
  • In the final chapter, Violet goes swimming in the Blue Hole. She feels a sort of peace, and looks toward the future with a glimmer of hope.
