Character Role Analysis

Toadyvine/The Kid

Toadvine and the Kid meet one another early in the book when they run into each other on a sidewalk and get into a knife fight. After that, they somehow become friends and the kid helps Toadvine beat up some old guy who owes him money. When they meet up later on, it's pretty clear that even though they hang with the same group, they're two different types of people. The kid tries to act tough, but he has a conscience and a good heart. Toadvine, on the other hand, wears a necklace of people's severed ears around his neck like a trophy and kills people whenever he feels like it. It's true that he and the kid remain allies for most of the book, but in the end we can see that Toadvine is the ruthless killer that the kid can never be.
