Character Role Analysis

Mental Illness, Yr

This role isn't as easy to define.

The real bad guy of this story is mental illness itself. Deborah has to conquer her own inner demons, and she has to scale the walls she has unconsciously built up around the true sources of her illness. She has to get past Yr.

Deborah makes life worse for herself by clinging to Yr and leaving the real world. This retreat isolates her and cuts her off from love and life. The gods of Yr work against her and punish her every time she tries to reconnect with the world and get to the truth of why she created Yr in the first place. Yr isn't a cut-and-dried enemy, but it is a symptom of mental illness.
