- Annabel is at the gym when she sees a commercial that she taped for Kopf's Department Store months ago, and she immediately leaves.
- It's been a full three months since Annabel has seen her best friend Sophie, and she's scared of going back to school since Sophie is still mad at her.
- When she gets to the high school parking lot for the first day of her junior year, Sophie walks by and calls her a "b****"—so it looks like Annabel had good reason to be nervous.
- Annabel used to be best friends with a girl named Clarke, but she met Sophie the summer after sixth grade at the pool. When she first meets Sophie, she is rude to Annabel and tries her best to infiltrate Kristen's (Annabel's big sister) group of friends.
- At her mother's suggestion Annabel goes up to Sophie and asks her if she wants to hang out. Sophie says no way, but Kristen swoops in and tells her off for picking on Annabel; after this, Sophie runs away from the pool.
- When it's time to go home, Annabel and Clarke realize that Sophie left her stuff there. They take it to her house to drop it off, and that's how they get to know Sophie.
