Character Analysis
Colonel Lloyd is the richest landowner in the area, and although Douglass belongs to Captain Anthony, Anthony works for Lloyd. Lloyd is so wealthy and remote that he can ride around his lands without his own slaves recognizing him. When a slave makes the mistake of telling Lloyd that he is mistreated (not realizing that he is talking to his own master) Lloyd has the slave punished for daring to tell the truth.
