Just as there isn't really an antagonist, there isn't a guide or mentor. It's every man for himself in The Waves: everyone grapples with his or her own depressions, confronts his or her own mortality, and often times feel very much alone. It would be nice if there was a wise Gandalf, Dumbledore, or Mary Poppins for these characters to turn to when they need answers, but nope. Virginia Woolf don't play that.
