Chapter 1: JANUARY

  • We are introduced to Tita as a young babe born on the kitchen table on "a great tide of tears."
  • Got milk? Nacha, the cook, nurses Tita.

Chapter 2: FEBRUARY

  • Showing strength (or weakness?) Tita and Nacha prepare the cake for Rosaura and Pedro's wedding.
  • The cake is cut, the guests eat and start vomiting. Turns out Tita's tears are really, really powerful.

CHAPTER 5: MAY

  • In the present again, Mama E and Chencha come into the kitchen; Chencha announces that Roberto has died.
  • Freak out. Tita starts screaming and ripping sausages apart and blames Mama E for killing Roberto.
  • Dr. Brown is called, finds Tita a hot mess and takes her away in his carriage.

CHAPTER 6: JUNE

  • Ch-ch-changes. Tita's not cooking, but watching Dr. Brown make matches in his lab.
  • One day, Tita sees smoke coming out of a window at the far end of the patio and thinks of Nacha.
  • She goes to investigate and finds an Indian woman who looks like Nacha, making tea.

Chapter 7: JULY

  • Tita tells Chencha that she will never go back to the ranch.
  • After a group of bandits attacks the ranch and Chencha, Tita is forced to return.

CHAPTER 8: AUGUST

  • He put a ring on it. John gives Tita a big ol' diamond.
  • After supper, Tita stores the kitchen utensils in the "dark room."
  • Sly, sly Pedro comes into the room, extinguishes Tita's lamp, and they get it on.
  • Their love-making creates a brilliant glow that the others mistake for Mama E's spirit.

CHAPTER 9: SEPTEMBER

  • Tita makes chocolate but all is not well. She may or may not be preggers.
  • Gertrudis saves the day. Back at last, she and Tita drink hot chocolate and Tita tells her that their mom is dead.

CHAPTER 10: OCTOBER

  • Mama E appears and calls the pair "shameless."
  • Two amazing things happen: mom shrinks into a tiny light AND Tita gets her period. Whew.
  • The tiny light turns into a fire that burns Pedro and Tita rushes downstairs to help him.

CHAPTER 11: NOVEMBER

  • At the table, John asks if Tita's alright and she says in Spanish "John, I think we'd better call it off" (11,775).

CHAPTER 12: DECEMBER

  • At the banquet, Pedro asks Tita to marry him and to have his baby.
  • Like old times, Pedro and Tita go to the dark room, full of romantic candles.
  • How intense is their lovemaking? Well, Pedro dies. Yeah, it's that intense.
  • Tita sees Pedro in a tunnel, they climax, and their scorching bodies light the room on fire.
