The One and Only Ivan Chapters 92-97 Summary

H, nervous, showing julia, more paintings, chest-beating, angry

  • Ivan gets sixteen pieces of poster board, lays them down in four rows to create a square, and draws his first letter: H. All he needs now is the O, the M, and the E.
  • Bob wonders why home is so important to him.
  • Ivan waits to show Julia his work, and worries about the consequences of his plan if it fails.
  • The worst-case scenario is that nothing happens, and everything stays the same, and Ruby never gets out of here.
  • Now ready for the big reveal, Ivan pounds on his cage to lure Julia to the cause.
  • Julia sees that Ivan is up to something, but she can't understand what he's trying to tell her, other than that he's been painting a lot.
  • It's getting late, and while she's impressed by all his work, her dad is waiting, she must go, so she says goodnight, and leaves with a handful of Ivan's paintings.
  • Ivan sulks, fearful that all of his efforts have been lost and that Julia will never figure out what all the paintings mean, and that Ruby will turn out to be another One and Only like he is.
  • Ivan beats his chest and howls. He's finally showing his anger.
  • Being angry is hard work and it takes a lot out of him, but Julia sees that Ivan is acting strange and recognized that he's upset, so she turns to her dad for help.
  • Together, with a great deal of determination on Julia's part, they discover that Ivan—yes, Ivan a gorilla—has spelled out a word.
