- The men have run out of meat and call a meeting to decide what to do.
- They send out a scout, who doesn't come back, but Habib does. He advises them to fight their way through the surrounding enemies.
- Some rotting goat meat is the only food left. Everyone decides to eat it, even though it would be against Muslim law under normal circumstances.
- Lin tells the guys Prabaker's life story around the campfire, then goes off to share a cigarette with Khaled.
- It turns out that Khaled, also, had been with Karla, and that she'd dumped him when Lin came around.
- Habib appears from the darkness and tells Lin that strong men make their own luck, then goes off to deliver a fortune to Khaled.
- There's a sudden, loud scream. The men rush to find that Khaled has killed Habib because he discovered that Habib killed the disappeared scouts, Hanif and Juma.
- Khaled walks off into the snow, and Lin tries to stop him, but the others won't let him.
- The men eat the rotten goat meat in a stew, and then spend some time dealing with the digestive aftermath. Then they gather for the attack.
- They run out into the open and are attacked by mortars, but they keep running. Lin is hit, and everything goes dark.
