Sunset Limited Genre

Drama; Philosophical Literature

This is a play, which means there are no two ways about it: It's a drama. That said, it isn't some fluffy comedy piece. Instead, The Sunset Limited hangs out in philosophical territory, with White taking the nihilistic there's-no-point-to-living-so-I-might-as-well-get-busy-dying perspective, and Black holding down the fort in the collective-humanity-is-a-beautiful-and-godly-thing camp. It's just the two of them duking it out ideologically on stage, and since they never see eye to eye, as readers/viewers, we're left to mull the meaning of life over for ourselves.
