Character Role Analysis

Adam Bede

If a book like Adam Bede has the title Adam Bede, then there's a 1000:1 chance that Adam Bede is your protagonist. Folks, this isn't one of those meandering Russian novels where the protagonist says nothing until page 157. And this isn't one of those zany experimental novels where your protagonist is a cuckoo clock that once belonged to Napoleon's dad.

No, Adam Bede is a pretty standard, pretty traditional Victorian novel. Adam's the first guy we see, the first guy we hear speaking, and would probably be our first choice in kickball, too. The novel does move away from his perspective and delve pretty deep into Hetty's and Arthur's, but frankly, kids, this is the Adam Bede Show.
