Meggie Timeline and Summary

  • Meggie notices a man outside her window one night. She calls her dad, Mo, to come see, and the man comes in to talk to Mo. She listens in on their convo, and hears about a book and a dude named Capricorn.
  • The stranger, Dustfinger, comes along with Mo and Meggie on an impromptu road trip to see Meggie's (absent) mom's aunt, Elinor. Mo leaves a mysterious book in her protection.
  • Capricorn's men show up to steal the book, and they take Mo with them too. Distraught, Meggie tries to sneak out to go after him, but Elinor makes her wait so that she can come along too. Dustfinger offers to guide them there.
  • The plan is to trade the book (which Elinor had switched out secretly) for Mo—but when they reach Capricorn's village, Meggie and Elinor are thrown into a prison with Mo.
  • Mo finally tells the truth: nine years ago, he read Capricorn, his head henchman Basta, and Dustfinger out of a book, Inkheart; Meggie's mom vanished into the book. Ever since, Mo's been on the run, and now Meggie's been dragged into this too.
  • Capricorn has Mo read treasure out of books for him, but a boy pops out too, and he's imprisoned next to them. Dustfinger breaks them out, and they all flee into the hills; Meggie's just happy to be with her dad again.
  • Basta and another dude come after them, which scares Meggie, but they manage to knock out and tie up the bad guys. Finally they make it to a town, where Elinor has Mo and Meggie stay in a hotel with her so they can regroup.
  • Meggie just wants to go home, but Mo tells her he has to do something first—so she comes along when they go to meet Fenoglio, the original author of Inkheart. Fenoglio invites them to stay so he and Mo can work on a secret project, but then while Mo is picking up Elinor, Basta shows up and kidnaps Meggie along with Fenoglio.
  • Meggie accidentally discovers that she can read people/creatures out of books too, so Capricorn decides to have her read his executioner out of Inkheart. It will then kill Dustfinger and Resa—a maid who turns out to be Meggie's mom, who was read back out the book a few years ago.
  • Meggie and Fenoglio come up with an idea to control the Shadow when it's read out of the book, and it actually works; Mo shows up to help Meggie finish the job, and then Mo, Meggie, and Meggie's mom/Resa are all reunited.
  • They all go to live at Elinor's (huge) place, and Meggie gets to know her mom again. She also decides to become a writer, so that she can read aloud without fear.
