The Maltese Falcon Lies and Deceit Quotes

How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from The Maltese Falcon.

Quote #1

BRIGID: I'm trying to find my sister. I have reason to believe she's here in San Francisco with a man by the name of Thursby. Floyd Thursby.

If you were to play a Maltese Falcon drinking game (with soda, of course) and take a drink every time Brigid lied, you'd have a sugar rush in the first five minutes and two cavities by the midpoint of the movie.

Quote #2

SPADE: What is your name, Wonderly or LeBlanc?

Being a private detective, Spade is used to sniffing out lies, even in his clients. He seems to have been suspicious of Brigid from the start, and he isn't surprised to learn that she has provided him with an alias…or two.

Quote #3

BRIGID: I deserve that. But the lie was in the way I said it, not at all in what I said. It's my own fault if you can't believe me now.

Brigid's fallback strategy after being caught in a lie is to go into full-on "woe is me" mode. This, too, is a lie, but for some reason Spade seems to fall for it. He must have a soft spot for a damsel in distress. Would Spade fall for the same act if it were a man putting it on?
