The Book of the City of Ladies Book 2, Chapters 36-40 Summary

  • Once Christine has heard enough examples of women who help their people, she mentions how many men believe that it is a really bad idea to give women the same education as men. Lady Rectitude scoffs at this argument, too, and plans on refuting it by… you guessed it… giving tons of examples to the contrary.
  • Many of history's greatest men, says Rectitude, have believed strongly in the importance of giving their daughters good educations.
  • It's fairly clear that some men think women should be educated. The truth is that the ones who think women shouldn't are just mad that there are women who know more than they do. Rectitude even talks about Christine's own father, who thought it was worthwhile to give Christine an advanced education, even though Christine's mother didn't want her to have it.
  • Next, Lady Rectitude takes on the male myth that women just want sex all the time. But Lady Rectitude asks Christine to think of all the famous women from scripture and literature who chose death over sex with a man they didn't love.
