Josh's parents are nice, but a bit overbearing. Josh says: "one reason my parents feel overbearing is their need to discuss everything" (43.16). They keep a close eye on their kids, making them feel a little suffocated—so much so, that Josh's older brother, David, has moved several states away for college.
