The Prince and the Pauper Chapter 12 Summary

The Prince and His Deliverer

  • The prince hears about his dad's death as he is running away from the angry mob. He is sad for a little bit, but then he realizes that he's the king. Sweet, right?
  • There's some more scenic description of London Bridge and then we're back to the prince and Miles Hendon. They're almost home when who happens to find them but John Canty.
  • No worries: Miles Hendon scares John Canty off with just the threat of a fight.
  • Miles, however, doesn't know what he's in for with Prince Edward. The prince takes over his apartment, sleeps in his bed, expects him to make food, and bathe him when he wakes up from his luxurious nap.
  • Not only that, but Edward won't even let Miles sit. We'll just remind you that Miles Hendon is the only reason Edward is alive right now.
  • When the prince (whoops, the king) is full with dinner, he asks Miles about his history. A long story follows.
  • Miles explains that his father is a knight; that he loves the Lady Edith; and that his younger brother Hugh is a gold-digger who wanted to steal Lady Edith away. Hugh convinced their dad that Miles was going to elope with Lady Edith, so now Miles has been banished from his home for three years.
  • When Edward hears this story, he decides that he must do something for his knight in shining armor. So he lets Miles choose one favor, any favor, from the king.
  • And you know what Miles chooses? He chooses the right to sit in the presence of the king. Not exactly what we would have chosen, but we guess it's pretty useful. Who wants to stand all the time, right?
