The Prince and the Pauper Chapter 27 Summary

In Prison

  • So Miles and Edward end up in prison.
  • Miles keeps wondering what in the world has happened. His former servant keeps coming to the jail cell in order to look at him and denounce him as an imposter. We guess it's probably like being in the Twilight Zone.
  • Then one guy, Blake Andrews, comes to see Hendon. He's actually a good guy, and he just pretends not to recognize Miles. After the guard is gone, he whispers in Miles's ear all the bad things that have happened while Miles was gone.
  • It's through Blake Andrews that Edward learns his father will be buried in two days. This is also how he learns that Tom Canty has been doing a pretty good job as his replacement. Maybe too good of a job. No wonder no one noticed that he was gone.
  • Now Edward is really impatient to get back to London. He can't stand sitting in this jail cell; even Miles can't help him. A group of women manages to calm him down.
  • These women are in prison because they are Baptists. Edward doesn't understand what the penalty is for being a Baptist in his country. They inform him that they are to be burned at the stake.
  • Edward watches the whole thing and it's burned into his memory (pun totally intended). This is just one of the many injustices that Edward witnesses while he's in prison, and he swears that when he is restored to his position as king he will repeal all of these horrible laws.
