- One day Vahan sees the consul and figures out why Mrs. Tashian doesn't care for him—he's a skinny man who looks, well, dislikeable.
- Then he meets the pretty girl from the field, named Seta. She's the consul's guest, but Vahan's not sure exactly what that entails.
- She's also Armenian, and Vahan enjoys having someone to talk to (especially someone so pretty).
- They plan to meet up the next day too, so the next morning, Vahan does his chores as quickly as possible so he can meet Seta.
- When he gets to their meeting spot, he waits for her—and since he's nervous, he counts while he waits.
- He gets to three hundred and figures she's not coming.
- But just then, across the field, he sees her from far away. His heart leaps with excitement at seeing her again.
