Forgotten Fire Chapter 9 Summary

  • Running, Vahan and Sisak travel away from the soldiers and the camp, pushing forward even when their legs seem like they're about to quit.
  • Sisak tries to encourage Vahan by telling him they're getting closer to their destination, but Vahan knows this isn't true.
  • Then Sisak says, "'this is how steel is made,'" and Vahan smiles. Wait, what? It turns out their dad used to say this to them when their character was tested—steel is strong after all, but only gets that way through fire.
  • Vahan admits to us that he doesn't feel like steel—or like carrying on for that matter—but he does anyway; he knows it's what his dad would have done.
  • They keep walking until they make it to Sanis, where they finally catch a break when they see some mulberry trees with fruit on them. They eat and eat, after not eating for a long time.
  • When he goes to sleep, Vahan tries to remember who he is. He thinks he's Vahan Kenderian, an Armenian boy who lives in a nice house with a great family, but he's not so sure anymore.
  • As he wakes up, he sees a man with a gun over his head.
