Forgotten Fire Chapter 33 Summary

  • In the afternoon the next day, Mr. Koulouris's buddy takes Vahan aboard a ship. It's like a whole new world to Vahan, who is convinced Constantinople is full of promise for him.
  • He stays in a small room with another kid around his age. Still unsure about whether to trust this guy, Vahan keeps his defenses up until they are floating away.
  • It takes four days to get to Constantinople, and both Vahan and Gagik get sick on the trip, unable to even eat or drink because they're so seasick.
  • When they chat about Constantinople, it's as the best place in the world, with bazaars and gold everywhere you turn.
  • With nothing to do but think, Vahan starts to remember details of his journey; he thinks about his family dying and the terrible things he's seen, but it only makes him feel worse.
  • When they get to Constantinople, the boys are ordered to take off their shoes, hand over any money, and climb out of the boat.
  • Vahan isn't sure what this all means, so he does as he's told—and as he and Gagik get in the water and make their way to the shore, he's still not sure if he's free or not.
  • When they reach the bank, Vahan and Gagik admit they thought they were goners. They're finally free, though, and in the land of promise, a.k.a. Constantinople.
