Dark Daughters

Character Analysis

Enyo

This gal is one of the Dark Daughters and also one of Aphrodite's minions. Much like Aphrodite, she acts nice and is beautiful on the outside, but inside, she's rotten. Her name means warlike, and she tells Zoey:

"We got the names from Greek mythology. They were the three sisters of the Gorgon and Scylla. Myth says they were born as hags who shared an eye, but we decided that was probably just bulls*** male-dominant propaganda written by human men who wanted to keep strong women down." (16.59)

Too bad her feminist instincts seem to pretty much stop there—she's right there with Aphrodite in her terrible exploits, and she rubs it in that Zoey drank blood at the Dark Daughters full moon ritual, saying:

"That makes you some kind of freak, doesn't it? Somehow you're fledgling and vamp, all in one, and you wanted more of that kid's blood than just a taste." (16.101)

Yep, she sounds really nice. Not.

Deino

Another of Aphrodite's groupies, this vampyre fledgling "was obviously mixed and had a gorgeous combination of really pretty, coffee-with-lots-of-cream skin and excellent thick, curly hair" (16.42). But, much like Enyo, she's "freakishly perfect" (16.43) on the outside, but creepy on the inside.

She chose her name because it means "terrible," as a throwback to Greek mythology. She further states: "Human men suck" (16.61), because apparently vampyres are the master race or something disturbing like that. She doesn't feel badly about using humans as food, either, saying: "That's what we call humans—refrigerators and snack bars. You know—breakfast, lunch, and dinner" (16.97). Stay classy, Deino.

When Aphrodite's Samhain ritual goes wrong, Deino says, "Yeah, we don't want any part of this kind of s***!" (28.34) and extinguishes her candle, thus breaking the ritual circle and putting everyone in danger. This girl clearly isn't that brave or loyal, though she is pretty terrible.

Pemphredo

Another of Aphrodite's lackeys, her name means wasp. She lights the incense during the Dark Daughters full moon ritual. She also participates in the conversation informing Zoey that she just drank blood during the ritual, referring to Elliott (the kid who'd donated blood) as "practically human […] No wonder all he's good for is a snack bar" (16.95). She might be overestimating her own value, though, since she runs away from the Samhain ritual circle along with the rest of Aphrodite's flunkies, thus proving that no matter how intimidating a name you take, you can still be a coward.
