The Wee Free Men Chapter 6 Summary

The Shepherdess

  • After the fight against the dogs Tiffany tries to wrap her head around the idea that the Nac Mac Feegles think that they were once alive, and that they're now dead (and in heaven), and that soon they'll go back to the land of the living again.
  • They go to a mound where the Nac Mac Feegles live, and Tiffany has to crawl down into the hole to see a large space with plenty of pictsies.
  • There is only one Nac Mac Feegle woman present, and she comes up to introduce herself as Fiona; she tells Tiffany that the kelda says that Wentworth is not in any trouble yet.
  • Tiffany learns that the Nac Mac Feegles used to get the occasional sheep from Grandma Aching in exchange for keeping the wolves and crows away from the herd, and they take the tobacco that villagers leave out for Grandma Aching's spirit. These guys really know how to party.
  • Tiffany remembers a time when she went to the fair and won a china shepherdess for her grandma. She wonders if it was a bad idea, since the shepherdess was so girly that her grandma might have taken it as an insult.
  • Then a new Feegle walks out, one with white hair. He says that the kelda will see Tiffany now, and the toad tells her to take the Special Sheep Liniment as a gift to the kelda.
