Glen DeWitt (Pearl's Dad)

Character Analysis

Let's face it: We know more about Pearl's dad's departure than we do about anything else having to do with the guy. The one time he shows up, he's full of complaints and regrets. And when he lets Pearl know why he left, we get a clear picture of the type of guy he is. He says:

"And that meant there was never time for me to do anything that made me feel happy. I realized, finally, that I couldn't go on living like that. I don't think anyone should." (25.43)

Hmm… is it just us, or does he seem super selfish? We're all for being happy, but he makes it sound like Pearl and her mom were the reason he was unhappy. Plus, even if he doesn't want to stay married, we don't see why he can't stick around in Pearl's life at least. Once he decides he's had enough of Fallbrook, he ditches his daughter, too. Of course the guy's full of excuses, but pretty soon Pearl realizes that he cares more about himself than anyone else. Too bad there's no one else to invite to his pity party.
